It all started with a vision. In June of 1956, Loren Cunningham, a 20-year-old student from the United States, spent part of his summer break touring Nassau, Bahamas with a singing group.

One night, after a busy day, Loren had an extraordinary experience. "As I lay down on the bed," he recalled, "I propped up the pillow, opened my Bible, and asked God to speak to me as usual. What followed was anything but usual.

"Suddenly, I found myself gazing at a world map that seemed alive, in motion! I sat up, bewildered. I blinked, rubbed my eyes. It was like watching a mental movie. I could see all the continents, with waves crashing onto their shores. Each wave surged onto a continent, then receded, only to return and cover the continent completely.

"I caught my breath. Then, the scene transformed. The waves turned into young people—people my age and even younger—spreading across the continents. They were engaging with people on street corners and outside bars. They were going from house to house. They were preaching."
